I've just heard The Bluetones cover of The Left Banke's 'Pretty Ballerina' and what a great version it is! Great cover version for them to pick too, hadn't realised until I was checking out i-tunes they had done this.

I've always loved that cover; although it's actually quite old - I think it was a B-side from one of the "Science and Nature" singles? So that would make it six years old, maybe... I remember buying the single it came on and trying to figure who did the original based on the songwriting credits listed. In the end I figured it out and bought the Left Banke's "There's Gonne Be A Storm" compilation, and was disappointed to find that the original was actually inferior IMHO. Although there's a lot of other great stuff on there. so I can recommend it anyway. (Although looking at it on Amazon Sellers it seems to sell for silly money now (£90!) so I guess it must be deleted.)

Yeh I have There's Gonna Be A Storm and it's quite amazing. Really really great album. I do like the bluetones version of Pretty Ballerina but probably prefer the original. It seems a shame the Left Banke's music isn't more accessible as it rivals most of the great mmusic from the late 60s.

am pretty sure it was the Bside off of the last single to come off of "returnto th last chance saloon"

my memory is a little hazy, forgotten what the Aside was(think it was 4 day weekend, it was a mail order only release I think)

the other bsides was Mr soul(quite a good cover if you ask me, have heard worse N Young covers)

on the topic of covers, OCS coer of Neil YOungs on the way home is a MIGHTY version

over and out

Yeah, I think you're right about "4 Day Weekend"; I do own that one, ordered it when it came out. Oddly enough I was thinking about that release when I mentioned in the other thread about KS issuing internet-only CD versions of future singles.

I was surprised to hear when watching the Bluetones DVD recently (great buy btw) that the manga video for "4 Day Weekend" was actually made especially for that song. I kind of thought that (apart from a couple of brief shots of the band in animated form) that it was something they'd re-used from elsewhere. Just because it looked like something that would be way too time-consuming and expensive to produce to acoompany a low-profile single release like that. But according to the band's commentary it was made for the song, and didn't even cost much.

sorry am rambling on about the Bluetones, do you have many of their singles? as all the BSides circa 1996-8 are AMAZING

I love the first half of RTTLCS, but it tails of a bit towards the end imho. Maybe that's why I don't remember the bonus track (or is it one of these you have to play with the cd buttons to find?), because I've usually switched it off before it's gotten to the end.

I'd say the first one is my favourite, but then again it's probably one of my top 5 favourite albums by any band...

well they've released a bunch of stuff since the last proper album:

- promo video DVD
- live DVD
- live CD to accompany the DVD
- CD of first album demos
- BBC sessions CD

Although I've probably missed something heh

I've bought all their singles when they first came out, with the exception of the very first Fierce Panda one (although that's on the demos CD already mentioned anyway.) So yeah, I should have them all Smiler

What's the live DVD?? I've got all the other bits but not seen that one I think. I love the Bluetones, and they are touring again next year, well pleased Big Grin I also really love Last Chance Saloon, although my other half isn't so keen (he loves the band as much as me, just not that record as a whole). Incidentally, you can get hold of Pretty Ballerina on the Singles collection and A Rough Outline

"Beat About The Bush":

It hasn't been out for long (haven't got it myself yet.) I believe it's a recording of the same SBE 2005 gig that features on the "Once Upon A Time In West Twelve" live CD, but I wouldn't want to swear to that. I'm sure it'll be great anyway (I've never seen them play a bad show live yet, and how could anything that features a live version of "I Was A Teenage Jesus" not be essential?)

I've got the Fi-Lo Beddow EP; it sounds very much like an acoustic Bluetones really. He has a distinctive voice, so I guess that's inevitable really. But it's well worth getting hold of.

I got the impression that at one of the recent solo gigs some moron punched him in the face (he still had a black eye at a subsequent 'Tones gig.) So I don't know if that will affect the likelihood of future solo gigs. But I hope not...

I have a bluetones mug here at work (a little off topic, but thought you'd like to know)

They know their fans are getting old when at the merchandise store there are mugs and tea towels!

I've got some news - Everybody's going down!

Hmmm well I guess KS fans must be just as old, since mugs are in their merchandise store too now...

As for the 'Tones, I went to see Dodgy on Friday night at Shepherd's Bush Empire (really enjoyed them, although some new songs would've been nice. But they were as good live as when I last saw them in 1997.) The Bluetones connection is that the support acts included Mark Morriss, doing an acoustic set ahead of his forthcoming solo album. I'm not a huge fan of acoustic sets, especially supporting ones where you can hear people's attention slowly wandering. But the new songs are pretty good, and he threw in a few Bluetones classics.

Here's a video I made of "Marblehead Johnson":
