I know there are a few Potter fans on here so, don't know if anyone else has heard about this?

http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/845/845283p1.html

What do we all think?

What i'd like to know, is how OOTP is nearly 900 pages long. By my count it's nearly 800.

I think they've realised they won't be able to make much more money out of it (well appart from re-released 'extra long versions' and box sets etc) after this film, so they're just dragging it on a bit more. Come on, seven books and films is more than enough.

Well, there was talk about making the fourth one into two separate films, and it never happened. And since the source of the current rumour is anonymous (and quoted by The Mail, natch) then I imagine it'll be even less likely to turn out to be accurate.

On the other hand I happen to think it'd be a good idea (although having said that the seventh book lends itself more to pruning than some of the others, because not that much happens in parts of it.) Just one that's unlikely to happen for commercial reasons.

I've always said that the wonder of Harry Potter is equally dependent on J.K. Rowling's prowess as a storyteller, and the rich tapestry of details that makes up the wizarding world. I love that each character has their story, regardless of whether we will ever hear it. As such, their attempts to showhorn all of that into a film have had limited success. I think the books would have made a much better TV series on those grounds, but as drykid (I think) said last time, there's a lot more money in film!

So, I think it's a great idea - of all the books, this is probably one of the more important to get right - previous films have had to rush really important bits, and it's highly upsetting. To be honest, I think the only truly heinous directors were Chris Columbus and Michael Newell - the others seemed to do a pretty good job (particularly Alfonso Cuaron), it's just that Steve Kloves' screenplays are horrendous, and really seem to miss the point on too many occasions to be forgiveable! I suppose it must lose something in the editing, but so many useless, made-up pieces are added in, and when so much has had to be missed out, I really don't understand how he can justify it!

But yes, I had heard the rumours. I hope they are true! Smiler

Can't see it happening, the longest book was Order of the Phoenix, which was one film.

Mmmm, but the editing of OotP was rather controversial - there was so much secrecy surrounding it that no single editor saw the whole book before it went to print. It did not need to be as long as it was, and by that virtue, I can see it being much easier to edit than DH, which had less filler. Also, there's a sense of pomp in splitting the final part in two - I can't see Warner Brothers going for it in the middle of the series, but the ending is different. On the other hand, there were similar rumours when GoF was being made, so I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Mmph. I actually don't think it's encessary - it';s up to the script, really. Compare Goblet of Fire to Order of the Phoenix. In GoF they had no idea what to cut, cut out all the wrong stuff and left in all teh wrong stuff and the result - granted, not helped by the cdirection - is rushed and bad. But Order of the |hpoenix is a lot longer book - and yet the movie looked good and felt good and didn't feel rushed at all.

Oh, I am glad to hear it - this should be awesome! Although, we'll not see it for years, so I should probably go back to being excited about HBP...
