I've nicked this discussion from BBC 6 Music, but hey!
Colplay have realeased there new single Violet Hill for free from there website. What do you think about giving away free music? Does it de-value music as anyone will get it, and not really care? Or will it give some artists a head start? Or make it more accesable to everyone? Discuss! Look for signs and portents... |

Its only free for a week and they've had a hell of alot of publicity for their loss of revenue. Its only one song and with very little 'distibution' costs they are probably quids in.
I don't think giving away one track devalues the music in question. Is it really any different to hearing a song repeatedly on the radio. Nine inch nails did the same thing on the same day with a track called Discipline. Not quite as much news coverage though. Infinately better song though if you ask me. You don't have to pray for the death of your enemies, we'll defeat them with a song |

Nine Inch Nails have been doing this for a while and have made some huge returns in the long run.

The bloke on the radio was saying that when he was a kid he would save up all week to buy a single. Then he made sure he really listened to it, and it was worth it.
How many times have I downloaded free music then never listened to it? LOADS of times! Look for signs and portents... |

To my utter distate XFM South Wales have taken to playing it sometimes twice a day. I find it as boring and uninspiring as the rest of Chris Martin's drivel.
