Kula Shaker has nothing but my full support and I think it's cool that Kollected exists, but don't you find it odd that it was released after only 2 albums? Was this a situation where the band had to fullfill a contract with their label over the number of albums they had to release?

By the way, Oasis, Radiohead and U2 had no less than SIX albums before best-ofs were released (U2 had something like 8 or 9 by the time of best of 80-90) AND Metallica has yet to release even ONE compilation!! How many albums do they have again? On a side note, I know that the Oasis and Radiohead best-ofs were record company mandated releases much to the chagrin of the bands.

it was a part of the contract with sony, i think? a part of the agreement so that kula shaker could split without having to morgage their souls or something?

On the plus side 'Ballad of a thin man' was taken from it and put on the soundtrack of the "Stoned" movie. The story of Brain Jones and his demise.

I think its good, although like you said, after only 2 albums it did seem a bit wierd.

However, the playlist needs sorting! The single version of Govinda? A cut down version of Mystical Machine Gun? No Great Hosannah?!?!

Mind you, it did have the Strange Folk clip, and becuase of that, Kollected gets the thumbs up from me.

Look for signs and portents...

I wonder why they (sony) didn't just stick the full song on there, and have it as part of the compilation instead of just a hidden track. They would have sold a lot more copies, and it's not like KS had any input as to what songs went on the cd, so it couldn't have been Crispian saying "it's not ready yet - work in progress" or something. And it's not as though they were saving it for a future album, because they had already split up. Puzzling Confused

I doubt we'll ever hear that song in full.

From what I've read about other artists I believe the record company would need to seek permission from the songwriter in the case of releasing an unpublished song. And it's quite possible that the song "Strangefolk" is unpublished (and even if it's published now, that doesn't mean it was when Kollected came out.) So it may well be that they did need Crispian's permission after all.

That could also theoretically explain why a short sample was used instead, since I think there's a legal precedent whereby you can legally use short samples of things without needing to seek the permission that would be required to use them in full.

Ahh I see. I just assumed that if you were signed to a major label, then all the songs you record using the companies money would be somehow automatically published, or at least the record company would be the ones who decide if they got published or not. But I guess it depends on the contract. I don't know much about publishing anyway.

Well generally bands usually have seperate publishing deals and record contracts a far as I know. And often the publishing contract comes before the record deal, which obviously puts the record company in no position to call the shots.

Nigel Cross's book on KS implies the the band signed their publishing deal with Hit & Run Music before they signed to Columbia, although it also implies that one followed fairly swiftly after the other in the wake of the In The City contest.
