AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, i just returned from haldern...
so, i briefly met alonza and paul seconds after i got there, and they signed my ticket... according to the venue's homepage, kula were the first of three bands to play the little *festival* So I went to the front... managed the get the best spot.. first row, just in front of the mic! But then, to my surprise, the Killians came on first. Shitty German band.... the songs had titles like 'fuck the chicken'... do i need to say any more? Well, so i though, Kula second then... wrong again. Los Campesinos (I don't even care if that's what they are called... something like that, anyway).. and they were shite, too. So, I basically stood there in the front row, obviously bored and texting all the time. And then, finally, Kula! But let me tell you about the crowd first. It's a little festival in a small village in the middle of nowhere. So basically, all the village kids went there to get drunk. Noone actually went there for kula. 5% maybe. if at all. I was right at the front, and there were no other kula fans there... oh well. So, Kula came on then, and played an amazing show... i was the only one who was actually singing along and stuff... everyone around me was just drunk and annoying. But it was still the best gig ever... it was like kula played just for me... Harry and Alonza kept looking and me, smiling at me, Harry waved at me... and then crispian said they were going to play a daniel johnston cover and do we want to hear it... everyone was silent and i screamed yeah... so Crispian said 'oh, one girl?' and then he pointed at me and said 'well, playing it just for you, then'. Just, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Wot, this is not a proper review? true, but I don't care! Oh, and I got a setlist in the end I'm happy and I'm in love with Kula Shaker! _________________________ You know it will always just be me. |

Ah, I'm glad you had such a good time! haha, that's actually just how i'd imagined the crowd! Wish I could've been there as well...
You shouldn't have said they came on as the last band, we would've made it in time then! Any chance to see the setlist? ________________________________________ Kula Shaker Fanzine STRANGE FOLK http://www.myspace.com/kulafanzine |

they played:
Sound of Drums Hey Dude Out on the highway Second Sight Jerry was there 303 Mystical Machine Gun Shower your love Tattva Hush True love... Song of love Dictator Govinda (Kick out the jams, Hurricane season and Great Hosannah are on the setlist two, but were blacked out... and sound of drums was added in handwriting) _________________________ You know it will always just be me. |

well, do be too sad you didn't make it... the audience and venue almost weren't worth it really... had i stood anywhere but there right at the front, the gig would have been the worst ever, totally ruined by the circumstances. _________________________ You know it will always just be me. |

Just a few remarks on the Haldern show (I don't agree with Vivi on some points):
It was a fantastic gig, one of the most energetic KS shows I've been to - the band was simply on fire, and unlike in Cologne a few days before, they got the crowd going right from the beginning. Wonderful sound (kudos to the sound man - he did a terrific job! I'm so grateful I'm gonna send him a postcard or something...), especially Paul's work on the drums came across superbly. A sound with - as Crispian might say - so much "bottom to it." The audience was very much into the gig, possibly the most enthusiastic crowd I have ever witnessed at a Kula show. If they were mostly unaware of the band before, as Vivi suggests, the band have certainly put themselves on the map that night (even though the map in question is of a very small town in what you might possibly call the German low countries). I hope there were some music journalists present, as this was a performance you cannot ignore or be lukewarm about (so I'm hoping for some happy reviews). Just for the record: contrary to the setlist, they didn't play Shower your Love but Hurricane Season (quite aptly so thinking of storm Emma swirling above our heads and possibly also shaking the tour bus during the band's drive to the venue). Vivi: as you know I was not standing in the first row, but for me the evening was just lovely, and not marred by circumstances at all. There was a little bearded fellow next to us during the Campesinos gig (which was nice btw!) standing there like a pillar of salt, unmoved and unmoving, arms crossed, and scowling. But you should have seen him during the Shaker show, he was dancing wildly and looking ever so happy - a real KS devotee silently suffering through the festival's other bands' performances but then finally having his great moment. One final thing: The Campesinos drummer I think was allowed to use parts of Paul's drum kit, and the band thanked KS for being such nice, friendly and cooperative people. how many people did fit in there btw? Well if they were indeed all drunk they'd prolly would have enjoyed any other band as well

Kula Shaker playing last definitely helped, people being a bit drunk and all. But no, I really think many people were stunned by the performance. Sad you didn't come along, Andrea, you would have loved it. And we would have gotten that second encore!
PS: There are also some reviews you might take a look at (BBV Net, RP online)... |

Is that a bootleg of the Haldern show? (I'm not registered on that site, so I can't see the post you've linked to.) It'd be nice to hear "True Love..." if only so I can listen to the dialogue that Vivi referred to heh
"I have waited to be here Now I feel you, feel you near Take me home" |
