Which is a new development... only very recently, I was browsing kulashaker.co.uk . A matter of days ago.

Now, wasn't .co.uk owned and maintained by Columbia.. or Sony... or I don't know, you know what I mean. Owned and maintained by their record company... so does this mean anything, that it's not redirecting to here?

Interesting. I wonder if Sony were under any obligation to do that, or whether they just agreed to... or what. I don't know the rules of intellectual copyright for domain names etc, but it seems to me that Sony would be within their rights to withold the domain if they wanted to.

The Sony site re-directing to this one, would suggest that sony are again involved. What would be in it for them to pass the domain over?

Yeah exactly. It doesn't seem completely obvious that they have anything to gain by doing so - in that, say if they wanted to market another compilation or some other re-release, then they could do it from kulashaker.co.uk ... that is unless... KS are working with Sony again, in which case the move makes complete sense.

well www.kulashaker.com and .co.uk are still owned by Sony, so we can only wait and see til the expire (which is the end of the year).

otherwise, i dnt think its any link to Sony...if there was, they would have made the site over the old website originally.

Good point. I just don't understand how or why the redirect has been set up...

maybe i'm living in a fantasy land but it might be just good old fashioned good will, that sony have nothing really more to gain from the site seeing as its up this year ?

But that's not how domain name registration works. The person who registered the domain is the one who gets to choose whether they keep it when the registration period is out.

The only exception is of copyright - but, given that (i) Sony DO have a large interest in the name and brand Kula Shaker, i.e. the use of the name is by no means frivolous, and indeed something they are entitled to do so in their marketing of the kula back catalogue, and (ii) the fact that it's clearly not the case that a band can prevent all permutations of its name being registered for sites, then from what little I know of the rules here... seems like this exception wouldn't apply. And Sony would have the right to keep using the domain, even after it expired, by simply exercising their option to re-register it.

but maybe then, if thats the case, its a business decision, cause if KS takes off, its in there interest to help them get as much publicity as possible, as like you said, back catalogue sales etc and a link from the website to here is a pretty cheap and fast method of promoting...or possibly...im just talking arse! which is the most likely scenario

i don't think crispian would like to be involed with sony again; but in the past on kulashaker.co.uk there was a link just for Pi project (that was producted by sony); no mention of Thirteen, Healers or Jeevas.
So they could have set up the redirect for economical reasons - if the band reforms, sony will sell more copies of K and P,P&A; or they could be involved in an unofficial way; maybe Kula are simply without a label yet, and this site, with a different domain, was just quicker than all the legal stuff for the old domain's property and use...

i think for now we can't know... we just have to wait and see

I reckon that if Sony was involved this site would make mention of it near the bottom at least. The fact that there is no copyright statement on here makes me wonder. Maybe this hook-up with Sony is recent and there's yet to be a site update (the current main page looks temporary anyhow). Or maybe the band was able to secure the old domain names from Sony, or are at least 'renting' them...
