Pfft. Was hoping someone else would've started an SBE thread, since I didn't want to have to do a long write up *lazy* Also I guess someone else will have started a thread by the time I hit "submit" and this one will turn out to have been a waste of time...
Anyway, the gig was great last night. We got the Dr. Joel and the Companeros set (with "All Dressed Up and Ready" added in now). George Orwell seems to have been scaled down; all we got was a short bit of him introducing Dr. Joel and the Companeros (I got the impression that there was much more of this at other gigs. Actually I wouldn't have minded hearing more NO2ID stuff, but I guess a lot of people there would probably have been thoroughly bored by it, so maybe it was for the best..) Didn't see any tealadies... Oh and for those asking about posters, they were doing signed silk-screened prints of the new tour poster (seems to be a limited run of 230.) It's much smaller than last year's one, but the fact that it's signed compensates for that, and also smaller = cheaper to frame :P Lastly, I'm not entirely won over by Crispian's new boots. Actually it's not the boots, so much as the fact that he tucks his trousers into them. Setlist: Dr Joel and The Companeros (song titles somewhat approximate): (Dr. Joel. intro piece) Something Dangerous The Beatles (Bucky cover) Walking The Cow (Daniel Johnston cover) Thirty-three Crows (?) All Dressed Up and Ready I Ain't Got No-body (?) Radhe Radhe Main set (from printed setlist, but I think it was more or less accurate): Kick Out The Jams (MC5 cover) Hey Dude Out On The Highway Second Sight Jerry Was There 303 Mystical Machine Gun Shower Your Love Hurricane Season Tattva True Love Will Find You In The End (Daniel Johnston cover) Hush Song of Love / Narayana Great Diktator Great Hosannah Govinda Some videos of Dr Joel and the Companeros: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb4d76cEek4 ("Something Dangerous") http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3LGA8WBGl0I ("The Beatles") http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=X8n3OCwpuqc ("Walking The Cow") http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=M6SnGLLyJ7Y ("Thirty-three Crows", sung by Simon) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WzKftnIiSQY ("All Dressed Up and Ready") http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QDBM9wDXWso ("I Ain't Got Nobody") http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=suJ6zZtmqas ("Radhe Radhe") Quality isn't great; not helped by the fact that Alonza was bathed in white light and Crispian was sitting in near darkness. Maybe they thought Crispian's disguise wasn't as effective... But the sound is OK on them. I'll probably upload more later. This message has been edited. Those videos are great, thanks. I'm glad someone managed to capture the moment. Would be great to see the rest if you've got them.
Thanks for identifying 'Something Dangerous'- i've amended the Parr Hall thread. Yes, there was a short intro for Dr Joel at the start of the support set but then george had a longish (5-6 minutes) rant about NO2ID ending with the notorious line 'Kick out the Jams Motherf*@ckers' leading straight into The Kula cover. Maybe if they dropped this that is why you got All dressed up and Ready. You don't have to pray for the death of your enemies, we'll defeat them with a song |

Heh well I stole the other song titles from your thread anyway, so fair enough. I'm resonably confident about "Something Dangerous" though, ifonly cos it's announced as such (albeit in Italian, or something that sounds like Italian...) Actually I wonder what domino will think of all this mock-Italian messing around. He was slightly appalled by the MTV band-for-hire thing; this might be the final straw for him heh
We definitely didn't get that. The band came on after the usual instrument-setting up stuff and went straight into "Kick Out The Jams." "I have waited to be here Now I feel you, feel you near Take me home" |

Can someone tell the name of the song that was playing just before the band came on? I'm sure it's really famous, and it's been bugging me!
Oh - and the gig was great! |

At Bristol, we had the 5-minute Orwell cartoon and 'All Dressed Up and Ready'. ADUaR is a really good song. Is it a new Kula song?
The song playing before the band came on at Bristol was from the SF Sorrow album by the Pretty Things. |

Wow, thanks for great videos, I'm glad that I could see Dr Joel and The Companeros!
Is 'Something Dangerous' The Companeros' new song? Is it written by the band? (Sorry, I couldn't figure out properly what Dr Joel says. I thought he says that the band wrote it in Italian, then they converted/translated it into English, or something like that... but I don't know.) And I guess the beatles' tribute song is the Bucky's song which is called 'The Beatles'. |

Yeah, they played it on a TV show and on a radio session last year; but until this tour that's all we've heard of it. It appears to have undergone a strange transtion for this tour; the lyrics are different, and Harry plays a solo that I swear sounds identical to the music from that mad Indian movie that features in the opening scene of "Ghost World."
I was also pleased to hear them play the Kinks "This Time Tomorrow" (from the "Lola versus Powerman..." album.) Excellent taste! "I have waited to be here Now I feel you, feel you near Take me home" |

I think it's an original new song; although I can't guarantee that (I thought "True Love" was an original song for ages too...) I hope it's an original, because it's great. This is what Dr Joel says; but I should warn you that it's all very jokey. You shouldn't take it too literally: "Yea, I'm gonna try... I've learnt a little Italian for the occasion. They don't speak good Italian, but they've learnt some new songs especially for this occasion... written some new songs.. If you go to Google and translate, you write it in Italian and it comes out in English, and that's what they've been doing. They've written some fantastic new songs. and I'm going to try my one sentence of Italian on Romano here..." I assume when he says "They don't speak good Italian" it's a mistake, because it makes no sense at all that way.
Ahh I didn't know that. That's another mystery solved! I'll update the video info EDIT: Here's the Bucky version: http://www.last.fm/music/Bucky/_/The+Beatles+(Alternate+Version) I definitely prefer the vocals on the Companeros version... Can someone help me in naming the track played before Kula Shaker came on, it's bugging me also,I don't think it was the Pretty Things.
Great gig |

great videos. thanx for posting them
do you have all dressed up and ready video ? |
||||

OK another update to the first post. I've added "Thirty-three Crows" or whatever it's called (sung by Simon.)
Also I've re-uploaded new versions of the previous three with gamma correction to make them a bit less dark. The links have been changed to point to the new versions; so if you already watched them before you might want to give them another go; they're a lot better now. Hi there,
The song Kula played before coming on was Les Fleur by 4hero Youtube it - it's such a funky track. Reading the reviews so far it must be just me then that thinks the sound quality last night was pretty terrible. I was near the front just behind the moshing and to me it was like being in some kind of vortex ...at times a bit weird and really muffled and the timing went on a couple of songs - was there a lack of monitors on the stage I wonder? Despite this the guys gave it 110% and the crowd had a great time as did I but couldn't help feel a tad disappointed at the venue (which is usually brilliant) what was the sound guy on I wonder? |
