If this is the band testing out new music, then it's a really original way of doing it, and I love these new songs. Although Simon sings 'Thirty-Three Crows' in a country style, I can imagine a more 60s style kula version, and 'Something Different' would be great as a future kula track!
I'd love to hear a sound-desk recording of these songs released as a live download EP or something. And what's the betting Dr. Joel will be on the next album?! _________________________ Mark Charlesworth: Sunise and Shorelines. The new book, OUT NOW! Available on Amazon.co.uk |

If you don't care which gig it's from then the version on this boot is pretty good quality: http://kulashakermusic.groupee.net/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8...941048532#5941048532 "I have waited to be here Now I feel you, feel you near Take me home" |

Some seriously good photos from SBE here:
http://lfi.glbx.image-data.com/dynevent-action-nl.do?or...=asc&eventid=586666# Unfortunately you have to sign up to see them as anything more than thumbnails. And I don't think they'll accept registrations from members of the public. Anyone with press credentials willing to "liberate" them for the greater good? Actually I may just go out on a limb and say they're the best KS live photos I've ever seen. "I have waited to be here Now I feel you, feel you near Take me home" |

Guardian review:
http://music.guardian.co.uk/live/story/0,,2255802,00.html Another of these annoying write-ups that throws around words like "mesmerising", but then settles for a three-stars-out-of-five summing up just to make sure no-one is seen to be rocking the boat too much. But you should be used to this by now... No mention at all of Dr Joel and the Companeros, which on the face of it was the most noteworthy aspect of the gig (how many bands play a support set in disguise at their own gigs, exactly?) But no doubt it's one of the unspoken laws of professional music journalism that you can't arrive any earlier than two minutes before the main act comes on stage (that would mean less time down the pub!) Hey, these "bona fide media idiots" photos are really nice, apart from the fact maybe that Crispian looks as if he had "elfed himself." Not so sure about that costume! A bit Robin Hoodesque - a man in tights.

Yeah, I said before that the boots look a bit strange; and they're what create the Robin Hood / Errol Flynn effect. I guess we should be grateful he isn't wearing a hat with a feather in it heh Personally I think he looked a lot cooler just wearing a t-shirt like he did in Birmingham (wasn't there, but I saw the pics. Also he tended to dress that way at some of the 2006 / 2007 gigs too; Hoxton springs to mind.) "I have waited to be here Now I feel you, feel you near Take me home" |

Sha,e abuot he review - I was hoping to see how they would try and digest Kula's new support!
Ha, maybe they didn't quite realise it's Kula Gods have no one to pray to. |

the review was a load of bollocks. the gig, support band, atmosphere was special. it was packed from front to back at i stood both places because of exessive drinking and toilet stops. the best kula gig ive been too. and also on par with the best gig ever radiohead headlining the v festival in 2006. ps, kula shaker were on that day too
Why dont you make like a tree, and get outta here |

Crispian shouting motherf***ers twice must have made quite an impression on the reviewer
Naughty boy! |

Ah well. We've got used to reviews like that, haven't we? This only shows how much influence the NME has on other journalists in the UK who probably have no idea about music journalismn and just copy something bad cos they don't know better.

..Although, all you see is Crispian there - just one pic of Harry, one of Lonz and a tiny Pauli in a couple. :P I'd like to see more photos with them all. _____________________________ ***the mad Finn*** http://www.kulashaker.net http://www.myspace.com/kulafanzine |

Oh yeah, I agree that in terms of representing the band they leave a lot to be desired. I just think they're very good photos in terms of what's there. To be fair to the photographer, Crispian is very much the visual focus of the group on stage. I mean, Pauli and Harry are anchored to the spot for obvious reasons, and Alonza doesn't really seem to want the spotlight these days. The whole way he dresses, the body language, even the lighting suggest he's happy letting Crispian be the focus (although looking back at older live footage from first time around I get a slightly different vibe.) Here's some more pics from SBE that are also extremely good (not mine, sadly!), and that you don't have to work in the media to get a good look at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lornethomson/2251868183/ "I have waited to be here Now I feel you, feel you near Take me home" |

Another SBE review, this time a little less grudging (four stars! Although I think it might be a US website, so that probably explains a lot):
http://www.music-news.com/ShowReview.asp?H=Kula-Shaker-...viewID=2982&nType=3& Still no mention of Dr Joel and the Companeros. Seems it was a pretty well kept secret (which is how it should be; if everyone knows about it in advance than why bother...) While I'm bumping the thread, here's another video of mine from the gig, MMG this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-qLtvCKAUI Sound is craptacular as always. "Jack-on-the-box energy of Crispian's".
That's a new one... Gods have no one to pray to. |
