I love the intro to Govinda on the Melkweg concert. Am I just hearing things or does it sound Raagy One intro ish in style?

I can't really comment on the Melkweg one, as I haven't heard it for a while. But I did think that throughout the last tour they were engaged in some kind of competition each night to make the intro to Govinda more epic than the time before, to great effect. I hope they continue where they left off...

hey Blipblop

I think you're right I heard it too, and I was there Cool
I actually thought for a couple of seconds that they were about to play Raagy One, but it was indeed an epic (i like that word!) intro to Govinda

Yep. I think it every time I see them for about the first 15 seconds, until an overwhelming feeling of dissapointment suddenly kicks in as I remember that they always play Govinda last. My facial expression must change so much in such a short ammount of time. I'll get my girlfriend to film it next time and post it on youtube. Smiler

I know what you mean, you know it is the last song, but I love it, so that makes up for it!

Although I do belive after much chanting, they have come back for a second encore with 108 Battles and something else. I'll have to lead the Kula chanting in Exeter!

I'm sure I've been to at least a couple of gigs lately where they haven't finished with Govinda (although it's certainly been played somewhere in the set at all of them.) One was Hamburg; but I'm struggling to remember the other occasions.

I think on this next tour they should drop the 'hits' from the setlist. Or at least a few of them including Govinda. It's not as though people who go to the gigs would only know the singles like at a keiser chiefs gig for example (well maybe there were a few of these people who went to the comeback tour). I think KS fans in general are into slightly more obscure songs like bsides and album tracks. I am anyway, tell me if I'm wrong.

Even when you think a song is great, it is good that they can find just a little something extra to add, making it even better. They did that with Govinda.

I wouldn’t be impressed with any band that didn’t play some of the hits they had. I remember watching the Live 8 concert on tv and noticed several bands playing more new music rather than previous hits. I thought that was a bad choice. Even though I could appreciate that some of the songs were good, I wasn’t familiar with them so felt no warmth to the performances.

I like most of Kula Shaker’s music but took friends to the gigs who had only heard the hits. They recognized those songs and felt part of the crowd. Even for me though, I love the feeling when a hit is played and the whole of the crowd’s reaction suddenly intensifies.

I think you're wrong. There are very few diehards out there; the rest want to see the hits. I'm not saying they shouldn't shake up the set, but playing less than 3 of either Hush, Govinda, Hey Dude and Tattva would be unwise. Only IMHO! From hearing people talk at gigs and that, and considering the size of this messageboard (not that all hardcore fans sign up to bands' forums, but it is representative I think..)

sod the b-sides...

just play more new stuff. i'm in favour of dropping a few of the 'hits', but not if they're gonna be replaced with other older tracks. i love this band but their reluctance to play several strangefolk tracks live is plain bloody criminal. Razzer

what? They've played every song off strangefolk except 'strangefolk' and 'ol' jack tar', and i doubt they'll ever play strangefolk unless they use it as an instrumental. Not sure if they've ever played shaddowlands but still, that's only 3.

sure i've seen fool that i am live (could be wrong though) and cb doesn't count as strangefolk and it's a bit bob. wouldn't mind seeing ol' jack tar but i wouldn't be upset if they didn't play it.

There's been a discussion on here of pretty much every gig they've played since reforming, and I'm fairly sure no-one has mentioned on any of them anything about "Fool That I am" having been played. Unless they played it at My Super Sweet 16 UK, anyway Razzer

As for Govinda, I think it's pointless talking about dropping it, because the band have made it consistently clear that making sure it's played live at every gig is almost a superstitous thing for them. So it won't be going anywhere. And like 2-J says, the more casual fans who the band are trying to attract back would expect to hear Hush, Hey Dude and Tattva also. I think there's scope for experimenting a bit with these songs though; they seem to insist on playin "Hush" and "Hey Dude" pretty much exactly as they are on record, when I don't think they necessarily have to.
