Crispian's done another mini-blog, phone call type thing. You can read it here.
I'm so unbelievably excited that Alonza's doing medieval acid folk songs - I've wanted him to do this for years. The new album will be truly fabulous with his folk influences being properly included. Kula Shaker need to get some zithers and hurdy gurdys in their sound, they're pretty much the only types of instrument I've not heard them use.....And now I have to go and lie down with a wet flannel on my face |

Well I was just about to announce this but it seems Lexie's beaten me to it. :-)
There will also be a downloadable video update coming in the next few days. Look out for it. Best Wishes KS Admin |

Wow! Kula Shaker doing Medieaval acid folk songs! All my dreams coming true at once. I've always liked the idea of integrating a folk influence, and I guess this must stem from Alonza and Audrey's writing.
It sounds as though this is going to be quite a musically diverse album, which is great as Kula Shaker's sound was never one you could quite pin down and it's that level of complexity that really makes the music what it is (but then I'm a prog-rock fan). Take a bit of Deep Purple-esque clasic blues rock, stir in a liberal dashing of hippy soundscapes, a gram or so of prog-rock, a liberal dosing of folk, and a pinch of world music- add a contemporary glossing of modern production and contemporary sound and then take the whole thing back in time to the 1960's. What do you have? The next Kula Shaker record! Hurricane Season sounds great- I'm imagining if Kula Shaker covered Muse's Knights of Cydonia. Now, that'd be something! _________________________ Mark Charlesworth: Sunise and Shorelines. The new book, OUT NOW! Available on Amazon.co.uk |

Maybe the leather polo-neck will make a return
Edit: Perhaps I should explain that.... it's a quote from the XFM hijack that Alonza and Jay did back in '99. Which I have on my computer, if anyone wants me to somehow upload it. Is it already out there? T&C |

Sounds like it would be good to see that - leather polo necks? I never figured Kula for quite that kind of band!

Oh I've been overcome since I read the blog this morning about the medieval acid folk. I'm so happy!
I would guess so mrbaggins. Audrey told me she's written about 8 songs with Alonza. I think the medieval influence may stem more from an earlier incarnation of the Baebes that didn't include Audrey though. Back in the day The Kays used to play with a band called Miranda Sex Garden who basically mixed folk with goth rock, so if you were interested you could give them a listen. They were really quite experiemental and sometimes used the kind of Indian scales that Kula Shaker base their songs on. But yes, I've wanted Kula to go folk for a while now and I'm very very excited. Though I could see some people on here being appalled at folk music making its way in.... |

Well, I doubt it'll be out and out wooly jumper folk. More sort of seminal hippy folk influences integrated with the bands sound.
I've hear of Miranda Sex Garden. They sound great! For a kula fan, what would you say's the best record to pick up? _________________________ Mark Charlesworth: Sunise and Shorelines. The new book, OUT NOW! Available on Amazon.co.uk |

Difficult one, probably Suspiria. They are all totally different though so it's hard to say. Madra, the first is a cappella madrigals - lovely but maybe not for a KS fan. Iris, the second mini album is very folky but using some weird sounding guitars and heavy drums. Suspiria the third retains folk influences but gets much more goth-like. Fairytales of Slavery is mostly goth-rock and the final album Carnival of Souls is straight up rock and torch songs - some get a but jazzy! The albums are quite difficult ot ome by though - email me your address and I'll do you a wee CD with a bit of every album on, that way you can decide what you like before you buy anything. You can get me on lexie_rose@hotmail.co.uk And Luke, just by fluke I checked the official site this morning before starting work on my computer. I guess I'm just damn good |

If anyone wants it, the XFM Hijack session is here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V7DUYMA1
I had to edit it down by cutting out a lot of the music (to limit filesize), but it's a quality listen... a must for any true KS fan! It's Alonza and Jay on XFM in 1999 (before it was bought by Capital and became sh*t) introducing all of their favourite records. The music is really great... and I've left a few of the best tracks in for you. If there is big enough demand I have the full version... Enjoy! T&C |

I can't download this dear, any chance you could rip the whole thing to a CD and send it to me? We all know I love Alonza so I'd love to hear this stuff....please?
Edit to say: I've just remembered that today's Alonza's 36th birthday, so Happy Birthday. 36, my god what it is when your teen crushes get old and have babies. Not that 36 is that old. I'm babbling again. |
