Ian, you were right all along... it is 5/4.

And yes, I know this is completely random Smiler

Hah as opposed to 5/8, you mean? Well I'm pleased you agree with me, although I was hardly arguing from a position of great authority...

You still maintain that there are 6/8 sections as well as 5/4 and 4/4? I keep trying to figure out which bits you mean, but I get lost. It would be cool sometime if you could indicate with reference to the lyrics where all the various changes in meter occur. No great hurry though, I realise you have lots of other things to do that unlike this are actually of some consequence Smiler

What lots of things? I'm only working. Well, I have lots of things to do, I'm just stuck in a beaurocratic mess that means I can't do them til early July. Frowner *kicks SOAS* - I'm basically coming home to convert my CD collection to mp3s...

I actually realised you were right about the 5/4 because I realised I was compeltely wrong about the 6/8 - it's not 6/8, it's 3/4. "And it only stands to reason/ it was Hurricane Season" - the stanza that starts in the middle of "season" is 3/4 as it the one after it - I mistook them to one stanza of 6/8. I realised my mistake when I listened to the song on the bus today, cos when they switch to the 4/4 there's an "extra" stanza. Now, it fits with 3/4, but if it's 6/8 then you just got three random notes that don't belong anywhere...

EDIT: having continued to lsiten to the song, another case of 3/4 is the "just a simple traveller" - then "lost upon the sea" goes back to 5/4.

ok I've almost got the whole thing straight in my head now; but in the process I've just listened to it a few too many times and my brain has started turning to mush. Will listen again later with fresh ears. I do see what you mean about those two bars of 3/4 though. But like you say there's other 3/4 sections elsewhere.

Damn I might even use Noteworthy Composer to map the thing out just to get it completely right in my head :P

It's just a program for producing musical scores; there's probably lots of others. I tend to have a preference for that one though because it has the ability to take a midi file and score it out. Which can be useful if you need the score for something and you also have a midi file that is vaguely true to the original recording (which admittedly isn't usually the case with midi files.)

Oh, midi files don't need to be vaguely true to the original recording (basically cos they shouldn't really exist. Never saw the poin t in them anyway *angelic smile*).

Oh, as for the song, the whole two lines before the "And it only stands to reason" are on 3/4 too.
